Colocava a banqueta e a tela no mesmo
sítio, sempre. Sentava-se, tirava os pincéis. Começava a misturar as tintas.
No dia
Olhou
para ele e sorriu.
E
então ele desapareceu.

He always arrived at the same time.
He would place the stool and the canvas in
the same place, always. He sat, pulled the brushes. Then would begin to mix the
paints. Turn the canvas a bit - perhaps to better adjust to the light.
He stopped and waited.
And then, almost at the same time, he
painted for about 15 minutes.
First there were broad brushstrokes,
then they began to be more thorough.
He would lay down the brushes, arrange
them, the paints, and would stay there for a bit, I imagine he was waiting for
the traces of the day to dry up.
Then finally he picked the canvas, the
suitcase and the stool. He got up, just to go back the next day, same time.
But then there was a day that he did not
return. The next day and the next and the next either.
He seemed to have accomplished his mission,
but what that was, I would never know.
Marta
had arrived home a little time ago, it rained outside, it didn’t seemed like a
storm, only the rain hitting the window softly, cradling her laziness.
She
heard knocking.
At
the door it was a man – who she thought she had seen before but did not know
where.
He
was holding a canvas that he gave her. "It's for you, I want you see
yourself as I see you."
On
the painting she saw her face, but at the same time a face that she had never
seen in a mirror before.
aquele o farol?”
“Julgo que
sim.”, disse ele, “Foi ele que me contou que as sereias existem. Mas diz-me, a
horizonte.
Ela sorriu e
levantou-se.
“Vamos!”
Entendeu
aprenderá a nadar!
On this part of the story, she stopped and looked at
him: “Do you know that lighthouse keeper?” Was that the lighthouse?”
“I believe so”, he said, “He’s the one who told me
mermaids exist. But tell me, your grandmother, did she ever find out what was
there beyond the horizon?”
“Yes, one day she left on a boat, from the city. She
went across the country, many coutries, only stopped when her legs didn’t
respond to their call any more.”
“Before going in her last trip, she asked me to came
here, where she saw the beginning of the horizon. She asked me to throw this
necklace into the sea.”
In her hands, she was holding a leather string, with a
perfect shell.
“I think this was her way to came home.”
“Yes”, he said, “I think you should throw it from the
top of the lighthouse; ifyou want to, I will take you there.”
She smilled and she got up.
“Came on!”
Then he understood why the lighthouse keeper would say
the calling of the sea had taken away his mermaid. But, to him, the calling of
the lighthouse, had won. Love had not been enough to loosen one’s ties and to
bind the other.
But he was looking for a mermaid for years. Now that
he had found her, if the sea calls her… he will learn how to swim! ...The end? ...
A
lua veio visitar-me, hoje o céu é só dela, domina-o, assim toda vestida de
branco.
Imensa,
No
Aquele avião vem do outro lado
Um dia vou levar-te lá, dizias-me.
Tinhas
-------
The moon came to visit me, today the sky is
hers alone, she dominates it, all dressed in white.
It’s immense, like in the day you took me
to the top of the hill. We were so close to her, it seemed that if I reached my
hand I would touch it. I dared not try it, fearing that if I touched it,
everything would crumble, the moon, the hill, you there with me.
In the sky, an airplane passed, we could
see the little lights. That plane is coming from the other side of the world,
it brings adventure stories, of people like us, but who hear a different song. One
day I'll take you there, you told me.
You had big boy’s eyes, but all your dreams
didn’t seem to fit in there.
And I wanted, I wanted you to take me
across the world, wanted all your dreams to be fulfilled. And I wanted to meet
these people you were talking about me, understand their music, dance with
them.
But before all this, I wished the sun would
not come, I would just stand there with you, watching you draw dreams in the sky
that was no longer the moon’s...
Atava as pequenas sandálias delicadas.

She would ty the delicate shoe. Getting ready for a rehearsal, to get lost in the music. in the syncronized movements, in the beauty of the soft colours , of the flowing fabrics...
Facing the mirror, ready to go out for another day, for a moment, that dimmed reflextion seemed to appear, between the lights coming through the window.

Sometimes, on her way to work, those memories followed, the banisters were she grabed on, felt like a bar, the train going through, like applause. She would remember the stories she used to tell, the ones she would like to have told, slidding through the stage. Now she didn't tell stories anymore, but she still imagined them.

When she could, she would run away. In those days, that's how she saw herself. Like the little balerina she once was. She could dress like a swan and fly, or like a tree and spread her branches into infinite; be Giselle, Cinderela, Juliet, Tinkerbell. She could be who ever the music inside hersel would ask her. By the sea, she would dance with the waves,;in the woods, she would fly with the birds; in an open field, she would be a flower, frail, moving with the wind.

From the window of her house, she could still see the streets of her home town... The streets she went by, holding her mother's hand, to the small dress store, to buy clothes to her first class. The same store where years later she bought that dress, the one still kept in her bedroom. A soft cloth, smooth colours, small feathers, discrete, a small print drawn with pearls. She also kept the hairpins, she used to hold her hair, to set it free at the end.
E ouviu aplausos. Voltara ao palco.

One day ... she left her window and she went out and she danced, and danced, letting her soul free...! She danced until she was exhausted. And she saw that people were no longer moving on a hurry, without seeing her. A circle gathered aroud. And she heard aplause. She was back on the stage.

Talvez logo, quando for dormir.

Cleaning the day's make up, so that the dust left behind won't invade my dreams.
But our dreams go behond this moment, commanded by our subconscient. That bit of ourselves, talking to us in riddles, that sometimes we cannont unfold.
Tonight I heard a storm in the street. When I woke up, no sign of it, it looks like it rained in my dream. I can't remember being in the rain. Whether it was cold or mild. I only remeber the rhytmic sound.
And I remeber the memories my dream called, I don't understand what they tell me, I look for the key to this riddle. It must be covered in dust. Not the dust left from the day; I've tried to get rid of it; but perhaps it has been in vain.
But maybe the dust insists in getting stuck in the time machine...
There is a key, I will find it. Maybe latter, when I'm off to sleep.
